For centuries Andalusians have fascinated people due to their beauty and nobility. The name PURA RAZA ESPAÑOLA dates back to the beginning of the century. The common name ANDALUSIAN is not a correct indication of the breed and is often used for horses without ancestry certificates and non purebred examples. There are different theories about the development of the today's breed of Spanish horse. However, it is certain that as far back as 300 — 400 years before Christ, the Spanish horse held the same main features as today.

There are paintings and statues of riders from the middle ages that give clear reference to how the Spanish horse looked. In the breeds that form today's PURA RAZA ESPAÑOLA, there is most probably blood of the ancient Iberic horse breeds. But the theory that Arab horses had some influence is rather unlikely and is evident by the straight head of the Andalusian, rather than the typical concave one of the Arab horse. The horses that came to Spain with the Moorish Conquerors were not Arabs from the desert, but Barb. The Iberic Peninsula was much richer in horses than North Africa at that time.

During the 15th century the breed was run by 'Kartäuser' monks. They owned three huge herds of pure oriental blood lines and they were so keen to keep these blood lines pure that they even defied an order by the king to bring foreign middle European blood to the Spanish studs. Later on they managed to hide enough horses from Napoleons troops to save the breed.

Lots of famous monarchs like NAPOLEON BONAPARTE owned a horse from Spanish origin. In the middle ages the Spanish horse was very popular - it was highly treasured as a war horse and was much desired in Europe. Fighting was changing and the heavy armour was disappearing, so the massive inflexible horses were being replaced by the lighter and flexible Spanish horses. The Spanish horses played an important part in the development of the breeds such as the Lipizzaner, Kladruber, Alter-Real and also South and North American horse breeds. It also played a part in the formulation of the English Thoroughbred. Records of the DUKE of NEWCASTLE show that the famous "ROYAL MARES" were bought in Spain.
